Cleaning 90% silver coins...

Hi there. I just bought some 90% silver dimes and I'd like to clean them off just for kicks. Could anyone tell me what I should use to get them nice and shiny?

Acetone and don't rub so hard? Gets candy and gum off without mucking the coin anyway.

Is it the type of thing where you dip them in it and let them sit for a bit, or where you just put a little on the end of a q-tip and rub the coin?

Pour into shallow container. Lay coins one layer deep covering bottom of container. Place container in ventilated area over night. Retrieve coins and gently wipe with a cloth. Anything left stays.

Wear gloves for your sake, not the coins'.

look up brent kreuger on internet. vendor of coin supplies. buy EZ est if you want a dip. For something milder can get MS 70.

Check the dates and mm first and make sure they're not keys. Dont clean em if they are.

mintmarks. keys are rare or scare for their type. such as the 1916 D merc dime. There are lesser keys too, dont clean them either. Or the 55 D roosie. Look it up.

OK. If it looks like anything other than a typical 60s Roosevelt, then I'll look it up... most of the ones I can see so far are early 60's Roosevelts, though.

I would suggest you learn to identify key dates and mint marks as well as how to grade coins before you start cleaning anything. Otherwise, you risk cleaning something you might later regret.

Well... like I said... it's almost all a bunch of 60-64 Roosevelts. I was browsing through them the other night and found a Merc, but honestly, I don't expect to find anything "unique" in this bunch. I'll keep an eye out, though.

+1 on the baking soda and warm water. Just add a bit of water to 1/2 tsp or so of baking soda until you get a paste-like consistency, then scrub away. I shined up a common date Morgan this way and carry it with me most every day.

Full strength Simple Green in a container overnight. Then in the morning if I am doing just a quick clean up (not working on any specific coin) I take a handful of coins and throw them in a towel and cup the towel into a trough-like condition and then tip one end up and then the other. After a minute or two, everything is clean(er), drier and quite a bit shinier.

I do it to all my 90% non-numismatic coins- as if I ever spend them, people will be amazed how pretty "real money" is.
